McLaughlin & Stern, LLP Announces Appointment of Nelson E. Canter and Brett Gallaway as Co-Chairs of the Litigation Practice Group

New York, NY (September 18, 2024) – McLaughlin & Stern, LLP is pleased to announce the appointment of Nelson E. Canter and Brett Gallaway as co-chairmen of the firm’s Litigation Practice Group. These significant appointments reflect the firm’s commitment to strengthening and expanding its litigation capabilities.

Mr. Canter currently chairs the firm’s Insurance Subrogation Practice Group, concentrating on investigating and prosecuting property subrogation claims nationally for domestic and foreign insurance carriers, and will continue in this role alongside his new responsibilities. Starting his legal career in law enforcement as an Assistant District Attorney for the County of Westchester, New York from 1987 to 1992, Mr. Canter tried over 50 jury trials, over 200 bench trials, conducted over 500 felony hearings, and presented over 150 cases to Westchester County Grand Juries.  In 1992, Mr. Canter entered private practice and continues to concentrate on complex civil litigation and property subrogati0n nationally.  In 2011, Mr. Canter was elected as Harrison Town Justice and served a 4-year term (2012-2015) handling civil and criminal matters within the Harrison Town Court’s jurisdiction.  When Mr. Canter’s 4-year term as Town Justice was completed, he was appointed Deputy Town Attorney and served for 7 years (2016-2023) engaging in and managing a wide variety of civil litigtion, including subrogation and risk management. In 2023, after 37 years of practice, Mr. Canter passed the Florida Bar, was admitted and opened the Firm’s Sarasota, Florida office which compliments the firm’s offices in Naples and West Palm Beach, Florida.  With extensive experience across a myriad of legal specializations, and a proven track record of leadership, Mr. Canter brings a wealth of knowledge and strategic insight to the Litigation Practice Group.

Mr. Gallaway currently chairs the firm’s Class Action, Hospitality, and Art Law Practices, specializing in employment and general commercial litigation with a concentration on complex class action lawsuits as well as individualized employment and sexual harassment/assault claims. He has established a reputation for excellence as an elite problem-solver who is dedicated to defending his clients’ integrity, reputations, and careers. With a detailed working knowledge of federal and state labor laws, he has successfully litigated and negotiated hundreds of employment claims including breach of contract, wage and hour, employment discrimination and wrongful termination, WARN Act violations, NLRB actions, executive compensation, severance negotiation, and numerous other labor issues and disputes. His deep understanding of complex litigation matters and commitment to comprehensive legal solutions make him an invaluable asset to the Litigation Practice Group.
