Daniel Horwitz, chairman of the New York State Joint Commission on Public Ethics, has joined McLaughlin & Stern as an equity partner.

Horwitz, 53, was previously a name partner at 10-attorney litigation boutique Lankler Carragher & Horwitz. He focuses on white collar defense, regulatory and enforcement matters.

Horwitz said in an interview he changed law firms because 77-attorney McLaughlin & Stern offers a larger platform. “As a full-service firm, it will complement my practice,” he said.

“We were gratified when the opportunity arose to add him to our partnership. Dan has hit the ground running and already taken on several important matters,” managing partner Geoffry Handler said in a statement.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo appointed Horwitz as a member of the 14-member Joint Commission on Public Ethics (JCOPE), a government ethics watchdog, in December 2011. In April 2013, Horwitz was named chairman, a part-time voluntary position.
