In Vermont, a School and Artist Fight Over Murals of Slavery

Steven Hyman, Partner at McLaughlin & Stern, argued before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, in New York, on behalf of Mr. Sam Kerson, the artist who painted murals commemorating Vermont’s participation in the Underground Rail Road to help slaves escape to freedom. The case, Kerson v. Vermont Law School, seeks to stop the Law School from permanently covering the murals in violation of the federal Visual Artists Rights Act (VARA) because some students objected to the artwork that the Law School had Mr. Kerson create 30 years ago.
