Carolyn Kalos is Of Counsel in the Matrimonial and Family Law Department at McLaughlin & Stern, LLP. With more than 30 years of experience practicing family law in New York City, Carolyn represents clients in all aspects of matrimonial and family law, including divorce, child custody, parenting disputes, and financial matters. She is also an experienced mediator and parenting coordinator.
Prior to joining McLaughlin & Stern, Carolyn was Chair of the Mediation Practice at a boutique matrimonial firm also based in New York City.
Carolyn’s approach combines extensive litigation experience with a commitment to practical problem-solving and reducing unnecessary conflict. Having witnessed firsthand the toll that divorce and custody disputes can take on families, particularly children, she recognizes that while some matters require vigorous courtroom advocacy, others are better resolved through negotiation, mediation, or other forms of alternative dispute resolution.
Carolyn has specialized training and experience in educational mediation, helping parents resolve disagreements concerning school selection, specialized programs, learning differences, and educational planning. She also practices pet mediation and litigation, assisting clients with disputes involving the ownership, custody, and care of companion animals.
In addition to her private practice, Carolyn serves as a court-appointed mediator in the Ninth Judicial District, a consulting mediator and parenting coordinator for FamilyKind, and a volunteer attorney for the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG). She has also previously served as a trial skills instructor, clinical instructor, and adjunct professor in juvenile justice.
Carolyn is a member of the New York Association of Collaborative Professionals (NYACP), the Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York (WBASNY), the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (AFCC), and the Family and Divorce Mediation Council of Greater New York (FDMC).
Carolyn graduated from the University of Michigan and Emory University School of Law.
