Alan is a partner at McLaughlin & Stern. He has received the highest Peer Review Rating of “AV” for ethical standards and legal ability which is awarded to less than 1% of lawyers. Since 2012, he was named as a “Super Lawyer” in Super Lawyers Magazine (only 5% of attorneys in the New York metropolitan area receive this distinction).

Alan has extensive experience in civil and criminal litigation. He began his legal career in 1998 as a law clerk to the Honorable John McLaughlin. He then went into private practice representing plaintiffs and defendants in federal and state courts, arbitrations, mediations and administrative agencies. Over the past 20 years, Alan has developed a broad practice in the fields of business, contracts, education, Title IX, employment, real estate, art/antiques, constitutional, and criminal law litigation and investigations. He has successfully tried civil and criminal cases before juries, courts, arbitration panels and administrative agencies. He also successfully handled appeals in federal and state courts. Alan served as a town prosecutor for nearly seven years handling thousands of cases on behalf of the Town of New Castle. He also frequently appears at colleges and universities representing students and faculty accused of misconduct.

Alan was published in the New York Times and New York Law Journal on legal subjects including the death penalty, pardons, the First and Sixth Amendments, and has lectured and taught legal education courses on Title IX, litigation, New York civil practice, and the Military Commissions Act of 2006. He also appears on television, on-line and in various newspapers as a commentator and in connection with some of his high-profile cases. Alan was one of the authors of an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of Gill v. Whitford, et al. (October Term 2017).
